10 years ago today WWE bought WCW

Who else had one TV tuned to RAW & another TV on Nitro ? I know ppl that use to tape both. WCW had it moments, I watched from 1996-98. (Joe So Delicious tells me to watch earlier stuff I refuse) when WWF stepped its game up(Attitude Era), you had to watch both shows.

However, from 1999 on when Vince Russo took over, WCW got so bad it became unwatchable. Without getting into specific reason as to why WCW collapsed, Chris Jericho said it best “In the WWF you got Bret vs Stone Cold, and in WCW you got Piper vs Hogan”.

In 2001 pro wrestling had two major downfalls 1. ECW goes out of business because Paul Heyman had no money for the company. 2. Warner Bros. ends up selling WCW to the WWE because WCW couldn’t turn a profit making Warner Bros angry.

Lets focus on the event that changed wrestling as we know it. Vince McMahon BUYS WCW 10 years after the fact, it’s still a shock. I dont recall the internet having breaking coverage or spoilers. I remember Nitro starting at 8pm and Tony Schiavone breaking the news.

Is Styles correct ? To be honest I stepped away from wrestling during the Invasion Storyline. My friends would tell me it was poorly done. I feel it could have been something that changed how we viewed professional wrestling. I went back & re watched the Invasion angel. Like most I noticed the WCW guys were squashed, lack of name value & did not the receive best pushes. Its common knowledge Vince wanted to crush & burry WCW. Imagine the storylines that could have been ? Years of potential.

I have said on my radio show I would have rather seen WCW kept as its own brand. Even if WCW was run by Shane (which seemed like the original idea see below)… instead of splitting the overcrowded roster into a Raw brand and Smackdown brand.

When WCW went under, was it the worst thing to happen to WWF/E ? Blogger & friend Mighty Vin believes so “Death of pro wrestling. Worse than when Drew Carey fought in the Royal Rumble back in ’01″

One good thing came from all this….. Stone Cold Steve Austin coined the WHAT ! catchphrase.

I still remember watching that promo McMahon did at the start of Nitro and getting goosebumps, you knew you were watching something that was going to change wrestling forever. As far as the "invasion" angle went, it could have been WAY better. What they should have done is have all the WCW talent they could get and treat them as second class citizens in the WWE, and as soon as they could get the big names(Goldberg, Hogan, Nash, Flair, Sting etc.) have Bishoff come to the WWE with those big names and start a "Revolt" and say that he was tired of having former WCW talent treated like crap or something like that. Then have a real WWE vs. WCW match with the real top talents. Now that would have been better instead of jumping and starting the "Invasion" angle. You know create some build up.
