Dead End Hip Hop | Webisode 34: Carter IV vs. The Throne

This debate became so heated in such little time. It went from trying to understand how a critcally bashed album (for the most part) sold so many records….to a debate about whether or not Jay-Z/Kanye even care about not selling more than Wayne. All egos aside, I don’t think they truly care. For one, their music is superior. For another thing, there is the understanding that you can’t expect to sell as much as you used to in this dirty game.

Jay has never sold like that. When the Def Jam 25th anniversary came around they released the album sales of all of their releases and Ja Rule and DMX dwarfed Jay’s sales consistently during his rise and apex. Jay has been consistent of late about caring more about the art. He pulled American Gangster from Itunes because he didn’t want you to be able to buy single songs but only the album in it’s entirety when it first came out. Kanye was angered by the MBDTF leaks so started doing the G.O.O.D. Fridays to attempt to blunt the need for folks to steal/leak MBDTF tracks. Then for WTT they had Hale or whomever sleeping with the hard drive and working offline to prevent the leak.

At current it seems Jay is more in competition with himself and acts outside of hip hop because his achievements are no longer comparable to other Hip Hop artists.

And “Baby Money” if it was a shot was directed at Baby not Wayne.

You mean first week sales or overall sales? And which album are you referring to?
