Now that the pomp and circumstance has died down, about the Lower East Side cool kids struggling to make ends meet in the big city. I can say How To Make It In America was pure ass from jump. I have gotten into shows after saying they were trash and ate my words BUT I can say I never enjoyed HBO’s How To Make It In America.
HTMIIA defiantly had a target audience and demographic ANYONE WHO GOES TO STREET WEAR BLOGS!!! The writers never really highlighted the entrepreneurs and designer hustle. The plot was interesting, two twenty-somethings hustling their way through New York City’s fashion scene. The problem was they veered away from how to make “it,” HTMIIA lacked any and all substance. It’s like drinking water when your really thirsty it doesn’t quench your thirst. Its like drinking wet air just filler.
Lets face it you watched this show not for its recycled plot lines, but due to a stereotype…The niche “clothing label” you support or probably created in your bedroom. “Street” wear is out of hand now. It all looks the same and the only reason we fuck with certain brands is because this one or that one fuck with the line.
I remember when the promotion for HTMIIA started my twitter timeline was thinking this was the second coming of Entourge. I laughed out loud when I read how impressed some where with Kid Cudi’s acting….REALLY? Cudi spoke maybe ten lines in the first three episodes of season one.
The writers of How To Make It In America made the ultimate mistake, trying to make it the scenester’s Entourage. The characters didn’t have the same appeal as Vince and CO. Entourage worked because we ALL want to live vicariously through a celebrity. Not a fucken broke clothing designer and his just as broke friends. People would rather watch shows about living lavish than struggle. Why do you think the Kardashian’s are still on TV? Its not due to their bland/shitty personalities. Its because their fucken rich and go place and do things we the viewer can not afford do.
What prompted this post was a conversation with one of my twitter followers Kenan Bell. Kenan said “HTIIA did an AMAZING job at highlighting the fickle nature of the consumer as well as the media outlets.” I replied with Ooo you mean Generation me aka self-absorption.
I know a few people who are similar to the characters in HTMIIA. Some who really sacrifice to create something of substance and quality. Some who got lucky, than their are others who you really don’t know what they do for a living yet are out every night in “the scene.” Some are known for NOTHING and doing very little with out making any major contributions to the lane in which they are famous for. Than you have massive egos who think their bigger than they really are…False sense of entitlement type shit.
The show had few positives Aloe Blacc collecting a check for “I Need A Dollar”, Luiz Guzman acting circles around the entire casts, Gina Gershon and lake Bell’s boobs.
Ill just stick Psyche, White Collar, Suits, Royal Pains, Burn Notice or any other USA Network original programing. At least I know what I’m getting with USA network. The format is two people thrown together by chance become partners. One is the straight man, the other is the “wildcard”; solving crimes and exchanging witty quips.
