Add 2 – Save.Our.Souls (download and review)

I been waiting for this to come out for so long. It dropped on my birthday. Yeah, that was a good look. Took the time to listen to it over the weekend. This is a great mixtape.

Exerpt:

For all old school hip-hop enthusiasts: remember when our music was balanced? I know I do. We always had the artists that were street, educational, and even abstract. Nowadays, radio wants you to homogenize and standardize your ears. They want you listen to the same thing, expecting you to think that is all that exists.

Yet, true heads know the real. We understand that these times need a music that is diverse. We understand that our ears deserve a dose of fantasy AND reality. We want to listen to people like Add-2, the up and coming Chicago emcee. With Save.Our.Souls., he gets to demonstrate what much of music doesn’t realize it misses: a regular cat that kicks reality and spits that Dylan (i.e. hot fire).

Ohene – Making a Motown Track (video)

This guy is as talented as I heard he was. He can rhyme. He can produce. He can produce without actually sampling (if need be). Playing his own instruments, Ohene used some Motown inspiration to make music. Watch and see what he comes up with.

PhonyPPL – Phonyland

Hey come close, I want you to meet my band from Brooklyn, PhonyPPL. They literally just released their new album Phonyland like 45 minutes ago! This album is 3-years in the making, that right there should have you all sold. So on that note, everyone should be in the process of downloading this album right now by clicking here! You are welcome in advance. P.S. This is not really “my” band I just really wanted to be cool and say that. Cool? Oh yeah and that fine painting above aka the album artwork aka the real Phonyland is by Dougan Kim.

Below you can view an in-studio performance from the band.

Killa Kyleon – Regular/Average

We all know how much of a fan I am of Killa Kyleon. The syrup sipping, weight lifting, lyrical assassin of Houston has been grinding. He even has impressed Dante Ross. Yes, THAT Dante Ross. And if you don’t know who Dante is, then you need your hip hop pass revoked.

Dead End Hip Hop Presents…DEMOS Documentary: Inside Look

Dead End Hip Hop (the big homies) got to reach out to Kareem Fort about his recent documentary called Demos. It is a how-to guide for up and coming independent artists that are trying to make things happen in the musical world. He basically waxes poetic about realizing the reasons you want to be in the industry, meeting DJ Quik, chillin’ with Terrace Martin, and the wisdom that helped made this documentary happen. I guess I need to take the time out and see what this documentary is all about. There are plenty of featured artists that I am a fan of.

Katy B – Witches Brew

For those not in the know, Katy B is the queen of the UK dance scene. This talented singer-songwriter just put out her new video for Witches Brew, the fifth single from her latest LP, On A Mission. It’s one of the most acclaimed albums of 2011, and finally gets a U.S. release on September 13. In the video for Witches Brew, Katy portrays a (give it a wild guess) witch who puts a very lucky dude under her clutches. She sings to him, “come with me and I’ll make you feel so good”. Swoon. I’d love to switch places with the guy. Sexiest witch ever. If Katy B was more popular, she’d be the inspiration for many Halloween costumes this year.

It’s sorta like Twilight, except it’s good.

Lykke Li Does Kanye West

During her latest tour, Swedish indie-pop artist Lykke Li has been performing a mash up of Youth Knows No Pain, with Kanye West’s Power. It makes for a very surreal concert experience. Check it out.

Lykke Li and Kanye West are no strangers to each other, as they collaborated on a track in the past. In 2009, the hip hop duo, N.A.S.A released their single Gifted, featuring West, Li, and Santogold. You can listen to that here.
