The Gospel According To Ice Jesus: Monday Night Roh

As a member of the IWC (internet wrestling community) I am trained as we all are, to hate the current WWE product. To complain endlessly about our favorites not being used correctly, how the product is lame, it’s PG, ETC, ETC, you get the point. We’re a pessimistic bunch that is rarely satisfied. BUT for ONE NIGHT (and hopefully going forward, but time will tell) the internet was in full agreement, Money in the Bank was freaking awesome!

From start to finish it was a card that catered to the IWC. The build on the way in was simply fantastic and has been covered here on Emiliosparks.com in great detail. CM Punk spoke for us all, and we were hooked. Little did we know, or believe that the entire night would be hit after hit after hit (minus maybe the divas match, and Mark Henry but hey I enjoyed Mark Henry).

The crowd was simply fantastic, hot from the start. The PPV freaking OPENED to “CM PUNK” chants for crying out loud, ’cause after all they were in Chicago. The opening match was a fantastic Money In the Bank bout that saw 8 of Smackdown’s finest going for a future shot at the World Championship (Any time, any place, if you know the gimmick you know the match.)

Immediately the internet freaking exploded when Daniel Bryan (former ROH alumni and world champion: Bryan Danielson) captured the briefcase and won the contract. Bryan’s been pushed on and off since his debut, but I don’t think anyone saw his win coming. The crowd freaking exploded.

Daniel Bryan celebrates victory!

The women’s match, was a women’s match so who freaking cares. Mark Henry Vs. Big Show was fun for what it was, short.. sweet and the right guy went over in “If I charge for air, you Better Pay Your Bills” Henry. Christian challenged Randy Orton for the Smackdown World title, in a match that saw Christian cheered heavy throughout DESPITE playing bad guy, he came out the winner via DQ (stip said if Orton was DQ he’d lose the belt) and you’d expect the crowd to boo over a screwy finish but they didn’t, in fact they rejoiced heavy.

After the match I learn something, they’ve put a lot of freaking work into the Spanish Announce Table these days! Seriously Orton laid Christian out with an RKO and that thing just wouldn’t break!

The crowd remained hot here as they began to cheer Orton (who they were against all match) as he made his way up the ramp, screaming “One More Time”. So Orton went back out there, did the move again AND IT STILL failed to break the freaking table!

They don't make those announce tables like they used to, eh?

The Raw Money In The Bank, that saw a rabid crowd boo Rey Mysterio out of the freaking building! Seriously when they thought he would win, the boo birds were in full effect, man Chicago is a hell of a town, eh? Alberto Del Rio came out on top, making him both the number one contender AND “Senior Money in the Bank”.

Should be interesting to see where that goes. Finish was pretty cool, although a bit messed up. Del Rio unmasked Mysterio as they both battled up top opposing ladders, Rey choose to cover up his face in stead of going for the case and thus fell to his doom. Del Rio was clearly supposed to just grab the case at this point, but Rey had fallen in such a way that it sent his ladder back into Del Rio’s sending Del Rio crashing to the canvas. The Finish was messed up, but Del Rio just set up his ladder and grabbed the belt to a nice ovation so it worked.
Raw Money In The Bank Winner: Alberto Del Rio!

And then came the main event, the crowd was in a frenzy as Punk was introduced first with his custom one night only t-shirt. The boo birds were in full effect for John Cena, although you can here a FEW scattered cheers.

They went out there and through caution to the wind going for 33 minutes, in a truly epic encounter that has to be the WWE’s match of the year! Everything clicked, in spite of a few botches. They toyed with the viewers emotions at points. Near the end Vince and his Executive Vice President Johnny Ace hit the entrance way as Cena had Punk in the STF.

He demanded the bell be rung, as if this was Montreal in ’97. BUT PUNK was no Bret Hart, as the officials back was turned and Vince was too far away from the ring. SOO he sent Johnny Ace down there to put a stop to the match, and as Ace made it to ringside Cena released the hold and PUNCHED HIM OUT!

He was not about to win like that, if he was going to win he was going to do it on his own. AND IF HE WAS GOING TO WIN THE CROWD WOULD’VE RIOTED! Seriously multiple signs said such, and I truly believe it to be the case (well maybe not, shh I’m marking out). Cena then re-entered the ring, and WALKED RIGHT INTO THE GO 2 SLEEP FROM PUNK! One 3 count later and Punk had done it! He had won the world title on his LAST NIGHT IN THE COMPANY!

PUNK WINS!! PUNK WINS!! PUNK WINS!!

After the bell rang an irate Vince McMahon commandeered commentator Jerry Lawler’s headset and DEMANDED that Del Rio come out and cash in his World Title shot. This was it, I knew this would be it, there’s no freaking way Punk was leaving with the gold if his contract had really expired. Del Rio quickly hit ringside with tremendous hustle, the second he rolled into the ring WHAMO! PUNK KO’D HIM WITH A HUGE FREAKING KICK! Punk looked around, huge almost joker like smile on his face, AND MADE A QUICK EXIT WITH THE BELT! Stopping in front of Vince to blow a kiss in his direction and wave goodbye, BEFORE TAKING OFF INTO THE CROWD! The show ended with Punk exiting through the crowd! HE HAD DONE IT! AND WITH THAT THE INTERNET EXPLODED! No one saw it coming, but it happened! What happens next? Will it be worthy enough to write about? One can only hope!

Seriously is this NOT the greatest picture ever?

In closing, it’s moments and events like this past Sunday that remind us just why we’re fans in the first place! Enjoy it and let’s hope it last for a long, long time.

This Week’s Gospel: ROH Best In The World

First things first: ANTISEMANTICSHOW.COM

And now onto the Gospel According to the Ice Jesus.

On Sunday June the 26th, Emillio Sparks and myself were fortunate to attend Ring Of Honor (ROH)’s Best in the World I Pay Per View as guest of the one and only: Chris Hero. Emillio asked me to do a little review, but I’d rather talk more about the experience as opposed doing a match by match recap of the whole affair.

For those of you who don’t know what exactly an iPPV, it’s all the rage these days in indy wrestling. Basically companies all over the tri state area are putting their shows out there on the internet for a small price (10-15 bucks), thus giving those who can’t make it to the shows or wait for the DVD to come out a chance to see the show as it happens. This is pretty darn awesome, but for the most part doesn’t always end up feeling “special”. Mainly because most of these companies simply take their standard run of the mill monthly card and toss it out there on the net live. There’s nothing wrong with that. Heck diehards eat that stuff up. ROH however is a very different beast.

Kings of Wrestling theme song by Cody B. Ware, Emilio Sparks and J. Glaze

Check out the new theme song for The Kings of Wrestling. Known individually as Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli, the Kings of Wrestling are the current World Tag Team champions for Ring of Honor. The track, titled KoW (Kings), is performed by Cody B. Ware, and produced by Emilio Sparks and J. Glaze. A lot of hard work was put into this track, and seriously…it’s really good. A great tag team needs great entrance music.

Emilio does Ring Of Honor

Words by Mickey Lavender

Last Saturday, Emilio and I attended the Ring Of Honor wrestling event in NYC. Sparks was expecting the highest quality of wrestling but what he got was so much more. Thanks to AC and former TNA Superstar Sonjay Dutt, Emilio got to go backstage and hang out with the wrestlers.

Behind the curtain, the same guys who feud and give eachother hell in the ring, sat together, told jokes, and were “boys.” Roderick Strong, The Dark City Fight Club, Kevin Steen, El Generico, Claudio Castagnoli, Kenny Omega, The Briscoes and others were backstage mingling. Bret Hart and Jim Cornette made brief appearances as well. The Broke Celebrity didn’t show his markdom too much and kept it cool. He spoke to the guys of the locker room like regular people, and they seemed to appreciate it. It’s no doubt that the wrestlers appreciate their fans, but at shows, it’s probably not that common for them to talk to a fan about things other than wrestling. They’re people with different interests just like any of us.

For most of the night, Emilio talked hip hop with Chris Hero. Hero is an avid fan of the genre. The former co-trainer of the Chikara Wrestle Factory praised Jay-Z’s Blue Print 3, ODB’s first record, and Kanye West. He also stated “Sound Off is the perfect introduction for Slaughterhouse.” He knows his stuff. During his tag teaming days with Claudio Castagnoli, their double team finisher was known as the KRS-1, after the legendary MC. The big topic of conversation between him and Emilio was his new hip hop entrance theme. He urged Sparks to listen to it carefully when his match was up. After his brutal bout with Eddie Kingston, which left him bloodied, Hero’s first words after the match were directed towards Emilio, bloody face and all. “Did you hear the song? What did you think?.”

It just so happened that Tiesto was DJing six floors below the event. The bass was audible throughout the night. Hero, Eddie Kingston, and Korey Chavis joked about the situation. “It’d be so funny if Tiesto dropped the beat right on this Cornette promo,” said Hero. Kingston responded. “And then Cornette would start rhyming to it!”

What happened backstage wasn’t the only memorable part of the night. The action that took place inside of the squared circle was definitely something to remember. After suffering a broken elbow the night before, Eddie Edwards still defended his Tag Team championship alongside Davey Richards against Steen and Generico in a brutal ladder match. Even with a cast, his performance was impressive. While he portrays a heel, the audience couldn’t help but cheer for him because of his dedication to the sport. He gave his all. All four men gave their all. Steen and Generico performed death defying spots, and somehow were able to walk post match. Other solid matches included Austin Aries defending the ROH Word Title to Petey Williams, The Briscoes vs The Young Bucks and most importantly, the main event, Bryan Danielson vs Nigel Mcguinness in their last ever match for the company before leaving for WWE. They went hold for hold and after over thirty minutes, Danielson was the victor. Post match, Mcguinness and Danielson thanked the fans, their fellow wrestlers, and ROH. Emilio Sparks couldn’t get enough. Before Saturday, he was a casual fan, but after the event, he became a die-hard, as well as a friend of the locker room. It seemed that the wrestlers looked up to him as much as he looked up to them.

“Besides meeting my girlfriend, it was the happiest day of my life.”-Emilio Sparks 9/30/2009. What a mark.

Emilio and ROH are the truth

Ring Of Honor Wrestling

Ring of Honor is the biggest independent wrestling promotion in the United States, and one of the most followed wrestling companies on the internet. WWE’s CM Punk, Evan Bourne and TNA’s Samoa Joe, Homicide, and Alex Shelley made names for themselves in ROH before moving on to where they are now. Like WWE and TNA, ROH has their fair share of promos, gimmicks and angles, but their emphasis is on straight up wrestling unlike their competitors. Some of the most critically acclaimed wrestling matches in the last decade have taken place in an ROH ring. These matches include Bryan Danielson vs Roderick Strong, Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi, CM Punk vs Samoa Joe, and Blood Generation vs Do-Fixer.

Ring Of Honor tours the East Coast and Midwest as well as the occasional trip to the West Coast, Canada, England and Japan. They currently have a tv show on HDnet every Monday at 8pm EST. Check out the video preview for next weeks show featuring a sneak peak of current World Champion Austin Aries vs Roderick Strong here.

Yours truly will be attending ROH’s September 26th event in the Manhattan Center. Also in attendance will be Bret “The Hitman” Hart! The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be! It’s gonna be crazy.

Check out the latest ROH Video Wire to catch up with their current storylines and feuds. Eddie Kingston and Chris Hero hate each other!

For more information on Ring of Honor, check out www.ROHwrestling.com. You can watch all of their HDnet Episodes on this Youtube Channel. Seriously, it’s good stuff and a great alternative to WWE and TNA.

WHAT! ROH Star Sonjay Dutt with Cloudkicker swag at 2:29!
