Saigon Writes an Editorial
Saigon wrote an editorial for the Huffington Post. Us hip hop heads should always welcome the thoughts of others.
Excerpt:
I decided I wanted to be a rapper in 1994. I was sitting in a prison cell in Upstate New York and made the decision that upon my release I would try my hand at it as a career. Not because I thought I was the best rapper at the time; but because I knew this was one thing where you could make a living and it didn’t require any qualifications. You didn’t have to be educated. You didn’t have to have a background check or be screened for your criminal history. Having a criminal history is not a good thing to have when applying for a job so I said ‘Hey, why not’ let’s go for it. While crafting my first few songs, I noticed everything that I was writing about were the exact same things that had gotten me in the ugly harsh realities I was facing in my life. It was my life, so I had every right to speak on it but I noticed I was glorifying something that wasn’t so glorious. I remember talking to a fellow inmate and close friend and he said to me, “Have you ever thought about rapping about something that might be beneficial to a young mind as well and entertaining?” I didn’t quite understand at the moment but he started to give me books and the more I read, the more of what I was reading would come out in my raps. I remember making the decision that if I ever got a chance to obtain a record deal, I would always make songs that would be beneficial to the growth and development of a young person. What I didn’t understand is this would be a decision that would severely stunt my growth as an artist in many ways.

CorMega feat. Action Bronson, Roc Marciano and Saigon – M.A.R.S. (video)
Many say that they want a full length album from them. Others say that they are a “fake Slaughterhouse”. I can only say that this song is dope as all get out. Plus, its produced by The Large Professor. Thus, whether they drop a full length is irrelevant. Them being a fake supergroup is irrelevant. The relevant is this: the beat is fresh, the lyrics are on point, and people need to be quiet and listen. That includes me at the moment.

Saigon – Preacher (animated video)
The video comes off on an animated twist. While still promoting an album that is very old, and still very hot, Saigon comes with the visuals for Preacher. I have a personal love for this video because I feel the same way as Saigon. Some of these holy men are glorified pimps and hustlers. Don’t believe me? Check their bank statements and lavish living.
Shout out to Worldstar Hip Hop.

Saigon – I Am For Real (video)
Gearing up for Warning Shots 3, Saigon recently released this song for the masses. And just that quick, he has a video for that said song. Be ready for Warning Shots 3 later this month. Right now? Enjoy this video.

A3C Hip Hop Festival: Day 2 — Dead End Hip Hop
So, Saigon rocks out to a Super Mario inspired beat. Dope. Jean Grae makes due by telling people to put their cameras away and enjoy the experience. Of course. Big Krit goes into his set and rips it acapella. Yeah. I mean, like I said before: A3C is the hip hop Disneyland. And that is all we need to understand about it.

Saigon- Oh Yeah (Our Baby)
Saigon put out one of the best albums of 2011. Yeah, I said it. You can disagree if you want to. However, judging that the music is great and DATED (2005-2006 or even older), you know that it can be close to “classic”. Many may feel differently. Take a look at this video, though. You notice something here? That’s right. A song with meaning. A video with even more meaning. How often do you get this nowadays?

Saigon – You Make Me Sick (Video)
You Make Me Sick from Saigon on Vimeo.
I think Saigon is illtastic. But the world needs to his “debut” album. I mean “All In A Day’s Work” was entirely produced by Statik Selektah and it was created, recorded, and produced in 1 day (24 hours). Yet “The Greatest Story Never Told”, is still not told. *kanye shrug. If you haven’t listened to “All In A Day’s Work” SHAME ON YOU. Statik Selektah & Saigon worked well.
